New grad nurse resume: example and residency checklist
Write a new graduate nursing resume that makes education, clinical rotations, license status and relevant experience easy to verify. Includes a worked example and a reusable worksheet.

Put eligibility where it is easy to find
Start with your name and contact details, then education, license/certification status and clinical experience. A short summary is optional. If you are not licensed, say “NCLEX scheduled” or “licensure pending” only when true; do not put RN after your name before you hold that credential.
UCLA asks for each clinical placement’s hospital, specialty, hours and semester. Use that structure when requested. Other employers may ask for different details; match the specific program.
Worked new graduate resume
Fictional example for a student applying to a future cohort. The candidate is not yet an RN. The experiences describe supervised student work, not independent nursing practice.
JORDAN LEE jordan@example.com | [phone] | [city, state] EDUCATION Example College — BSN, expected December 2026 LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS NCLEX-RN scheduled January 2027; RN license not yet issued BLS, American Heart Association — expires May 2027 CLINICAL EXPERIENCE Example Medical Center — Medical-surgical student rotation Fall 2026 | 120 hours completed • Collected vital signs and reported changes to the supervising nurse during assigned patient assessments. • Practiced SBAR handoffs with a preceptor and documented supervised care in the training workflow. • Reinforced discharge instructions with patients under RN supervision using teach-back. Example Medical Center — Community health rotation Spring 2026 | 80 hours completed • Helped prepare plain-language education materials for a supervised community screening event. RELATED EXPERIENCE Example Campus Library — Student assistant September 2024–May 2026 | 10 hours/week • Organized shift handoffs and directed visitors to services while protecting borrower information. SKILLS Supervised clinical documentation, SBAR communication, patient education practice
Turn clinical notes into honest bullets
Weak: “Responsible for patient care.” Revised: “Collected vital signs and reported changes to the supervising nurse during assigned assessments.” The revision specifies the action and supervision without claiming clinical outcomes the student cannot verify.
Weak: “Excellent communicator.” Revised: “Practiced SBAR handoffs with a preceptor.” Name the method and setting you actually used. List completed hours from your rotation record; keep scheduled hours separate.
Adapt the same facts to a residency
For a medical-surgical application, place the relevant rotation first. For a community-focused role, emphasize education and follow-up experience you actually have. Do not add ACLS, an EHR system or independent procedures just because a posting requests them.
A resume cannot cure an eligibility gap. In the fictional example, a planned NCLEX date is not a California RN license, and BLS alone does not meet Stanford’s listed ACLS requirement. Check those requirements before committing to a cohort.
Your reusable evidence worksheet

Start your own resume draft
Replace the prompts with your own facts, using the worked example as a reference. This editor keeps changes only in this tab; download or copy them before leaving. It does not send your draft to an AI service or save it to an account.
A text download has no fixed page count. Format it in your document editor and inspect the actual PDF before submitting. ResumeTurtle’s account-based builder and exports are currently in prelaunch.
Sources and method
Sources reviewed unless a record carries its own observation date.
The example is an editorial teaching sample, not an accepted application or hiring outcome. Program-specific preparation guidance is checked against UCLA and Stanford; each employer’s actual application instructions control.
