ATS Resume: How to Build One That Gets Parsed and Read

A resume can parse perfectly and still be a poor match. It can also contain the right experience but lose context because the document's reading order is broken. Review both checks separately.

1. 1Use standard headings such as Experience, Education, and Skills.
2. 2Keep dates, job titles, employers, and locations in a predictable order.
3. 3Use a single-column layout when you want the safest reading order.
4. 4Write job-relevant skills in the same form used by the posting.
5. 5Support keywords with truthful achievement bullets instead of a keyword dump.
6. 6Export selectable text, then copy it into a plain-text editor as a quick check.
7. 7Name the file clearly: Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf or .docx.

Start with the posting's must-have skills, tools, certifications, and repeated responsibilities. Keep the items you genuinely have, then place each one where a recruiter would expect to see proof: a skills section for scanning and an experience bullet for context.

Never add a term solely to influence a checker. If you cannot explain where and how you used it, leave it out.

Copy all text from the exported file into a plain-text editor. Confirm that names, dates, bullets, and headings appear in the intended order. Then compare the resume with the specific job description.
