Practice 40 behavioral interview questions by competency, learn what each one tests, and prepare concise answers from your real experience.

Behavioral questions are evidence questions. The interviewer is not asking for your philosophy; they want one real situation, the actions you personally took, and what changed as a result.

What a strong answer contains

Specific context

Enough detail to understand the stakes, without a long backstory.

Your responsibility

What you were accountable for—not what the whole team generally owned.

Visible actions

The decisions, conversations, and work you personally drove.

A credible result

A number, comparison, decision, lesson, or durable change.

If every sentence starts with “we,” the interviewer cannot see your contribution. Credit the team, then make your own decisions and actions explicit.

Build a story bank instead of memorizing scripts

Prepare six to eight stories and tag each with the competencies it demonstrates. One product launch might cover leadership, ambiguity, stakeholder conflict, and results depending on the question. Practice the facts and structure, not a word-for-word performance.

Frequently asked questions

What is a behavioral interview question?+

It asks for a specific example of how you handled a past situation. Common openings include Tell me about a time, Describe a situation, and Give me an example.

How long should a behavioral answer be?+

Most answers should take about one to three minutes. Give enough context to understand the challenge, spend most of the time on your actions, and close with the result and lesson.

How many stories should I prepare?+

Six to eight versatile stories can cover many questions when they span leadership, conflict, failure, prioritization, change, and results. Do not memorize forty separate scripts.

Can I use a school or volunteer example?+

Yes, especially early in your career. Choose the example that best demonstrates the competency and make your individual contribution clear.
