# Federal resume format: two-page guide and worked example Use the current USAJOBS two-page format, retain the details that establish qualifying experience, and rewrite a fictional program analyst resume with a requirement-to-evidence worksheet. Editorial edition: 2026-10-15 Official guidance checked October 15, 2026. This is application-writing guidance, not a determination of eligibility. Sam Taylor, the employers and the target requirements below are fictional. Follow the actual announcement and agency instructions. ## The current rule: two pages or fewer OPM’s two-page resume limit for applications through USAJOBS took effect September 27, 2025. Older advice to submit a long federal resume is not the default for this process. A two-page maximum is a limit, not a requirement to fill two pages. Read Qualifications, Specialized Experience, Required Documents and How to Apply before cutting your draft. Identify the evidence the announcement needs, then spend the available space on that evidence. Keep separate attachments separate when requested. OPM — effective date and rule announcement: https://www.opm.gov/news/opm-implements-two-page-resume-standard-to-streamline-federal-hiring/ ## Keep the fields that explain your experience Include contact details; for relevant positions, name the employer and title, month/year dates and weekly hours. Include series and grade for federal positions. Describe work at the level required by the announcement. OPM also calls for relevant education, credentials and requested supporting documents. When education is relevant or required, OPM lists school, completion date, degree and cumulative GPA. Consult the announcement for coursework or transcript requirements. Do not label private-sector experience with an invented federal grade. Sam’s private-sector work supports those activities. This does not establish that Sam meets a particular grade, duration threshold or hiring path. The following is content to format into a maximum of two exported pages. Page count depends on the template, spacing and your edits; this text is not a certified two-page PDF. SAM TAYLOR sam@example.com | [phone] | [city, state] Target: Program Analyst | [actual announcement number] RELEVANT EXPERIENCE Program Operations Coordinator — Example Services 06/2023–09/2026 | 40 hours/week • Maintained a milestone tracker for six internal service projects, compared owner updates with supporting records and flagged overdue items to the program manager each week. • Reconciled monthly activity totals against source spreadsheets; documented missing fields and returned discrepancies to owners before the report was finalized. • Prepared a recurring status brief summarizing delivery risks, open decisions and next actions for management review. Operations Assistant — Example Community Center 08/2021–05/2023 | 20 hours/week • Maintained registration records, checked forms for missing information and followed up with staff to resolve incomplete entries. • Compiled attendance summaries and explained differences between registration and attendance counts in a monthly staff report. EDUCATION Example University — BA, Public Administration Completed 05/2021 | Cumulative GPA: 3.5/4.0 RELEVANT TOOLS Excel: lookup formulas, pivot tables and data validation [Add actual required credentials or relevant training, if any.] ## Rewrite vague duties into assessable evidence Before: “Responsible for reports and various administrative duties.” After: “Reconciled monthly activity totals against source spreadsheets; documented missing fields and returned discrepancies to owners before the report was finalized.” The second version names the task, source material, judgment and output. Keep the supporting dates and weekly hours alongside the job. Cut repetition, generic objectives and unrelated older duties before removing evidence of a required qualification. Fictional requirement Evidence in Sam’s example What to verify in your own record Track milestones Six-project tracker and overdue-item escalation Actual project scope and ownership Check data quality Reconciliation and discrepancy notes The checks you performed and source records Prepare status reports Risks, decisions and action brief Your audience, frequency and contribution ## Check the exported file and required attachments USAJOBS recommends PDF to preserve formatting, requires a file of 5 MB or less and specifies standard U.S. Letter size. Its guidance says to omit sensitive government information, SSNs, photos and personal demographic details; do not upload encrypted or digitally signed documents. Preview every page. Make sure no third page appears, text is selectable and your most relevant details remain readable. Verify the file in the USAJOBS application preview and provide all separately requested documents. Keep weekly hours next to each position, and include series/grade only for actual federal work. Download the text and format it in your document editor or the USAJOBS builder. Inspect the final file and shorten it if it exceeds two pages. The free resume length tool is a writing aid, not a substitute for counting the actual pages.
