# Data analyst resume: worked example and tailoring worksheet Turn SQL, spreadsheet and reporting work into a clear data analyst resume. Use a complete fictional example, annotated bullet rewrites and an evidence worksheet. Editorial edition: 2026-10-15 Evergreen writing example. Casey Morgan, Example Supply and every project detail below are fictional. This is not a study of current hiring trends, a real candidate’s resume or a claim about interview outcomes. ## Make the analytical work visible An analyst resume should explain the question, the data you used, the checks you performed and the output someone could use. A tool list alone cannot show how you reasoned about missing records, inconsistent definitions or misleading comparisons. Use a focused summary only when it adds context. Put recent relevant experience first; for an early-career candidate with stronger project evidence, move projects above unrelated employment. ## Complete worked example Casey has operational reporting experience and a portfolio project. The sample deliberately avoids revenue and percentage claims because the fictional record does not include a measured commercial outcome. CASEY MORGAN casey@example.com | [phone] | [portfolio link] SUMMARY Data analyst with operations reporting experience using SQL and Excel to reconcile source data, define reporting measures and communicate exceptions. SKILLS SQL: joins, CTEs, window functions Excel: pivot tables, lookups, data validation Power BI: data modeling, dashboard filters EXPERIENCE Reporting Assistant — Example Supply 06/2023–09/2026 • Built a SQL query joining orders and shipment records; checked one-to-many joins against order totals before publishing a weekly fulfillment report. • Documented the difference between order date and shipment date so operations staff could interpret backlog and completed-order views consistently. • Added an exception worksheet for missing shipment references and reviewed unresolved records with the operations lead. • Presented a monthly dashboard with filter definitions and a notes panel identifying incomplete source periods. PROJECT Public Library Visits — independent portfolio study [month/year] • Cleaned a public visits dataset, documented missing-month handling and compared like-for-like periods. • Published the query, data dictionary and chart notes so readers could reproduce the comparison. EDUCATION Example College — BS, Information Systems | 05/2023 ## Why these bullets work Vague version Worked rewrite Evidence it exposes Used SQL Joined orders and shipment records; checked one-to-many joins against order totals. Data grain, join risk and validation Made dashboards Added filter definitions and flagged incomplete source periods in a monthly dashboard. Reporting context and limitations Cleaned data Documented missing-month handling and compared like-for-like periods. A reproducible analytical decision ## Tailor a version to a real posting Copy two or three requirements from your selected posting into the worksheet. Connect each to a real example. If a role asks for stakeholder reporting, move the dashboard and definitions bullets earlier. If it asks for data quality, lead with validation and exception handling. Those are editorial examples of tailoring, not claims about what employers currently prioritize. Do not add Python, machine learning, cloud platforms or causal impact unless your experience supports them. A course exercise can be useful when labeled as coursework; it should not be presented as production work. Posting requirement My supporting evidence Resume placement [Exact requirement] [Project / method / output / proof] [Experience or project bullet] [Exact requirement] [What I actually did] [Skills plus supporting bullet] [Missing requirement] [Gap to disclose or develop] [Do not invent a claim] Extract the posting’s requirements: https://www.resumeturtle.com/job-description-keyword-extractor ## When you have no business metric Describe scope, frequency, quality checks or decisions you supported when you can verify them. “Reviewed unresolved records with the operations lead” says something concrete without asserting that your work increased revenue. If you do have a metric, record its definition, baseline, period and your contribution before using it. Write bullets without inventing metrics: https://www.resumeturtle.com/resources/resume-bullets-without-metrics ## Finish a version you can defend Use the worksheet and editable draft below to prepare your own facts. Test public portfolio links, remove confidential datasets and make sure each listed method is something you can explain. Download your text, format it in your document editor and preview the PDF. Save a separate record of the posting and the version you submitted. ## Your checklist [ ] Name the question, data and output for each key example. [ ] Check that tool names are backed by actual work. [ ] Explain validation and limitations honestly. [ ] Label projects, coursework and employment accurately. [ ] Remove confidential data and unsupported business outcomes. [ ] Preview the PDF and test portfolio links. ## Your editable resume outline [FULL NAME] [email] | [phone] | [city, state] SUMMARY (OPTIONAL) [Relevant analytical work and focus] SKILLS [Tools and methods backed by actual work] EXPERIENCE [Title / employer / dates] • [Question / data / method / validation / output] • [Your contribution / audience / frequency] PROJECTS [Project / dates / public link] • [Data source / method / limitations / reproducible output] EDUCATION [School / degree / completion or expected date] ## Sources and method Original editorial example built around a consistent fictional work history.
